Summer Teaching Fellow

Overview

Giant Machines (formerly Upperline Code), is looking for Summer Teaching Fellows as it pursues its mission of creating pathways to opportunity through computer science education. You'd be joining a small but quickly-growing organization that already has partnerships with nonprofits like the NYC DOE's CSforAll, Break Though Tech, SEO Scholars, in addition to Fortune 100 companies like Google and the sponsors of FinTech Focus. We believe that technology has the ability to transform students' lives and careers, and we are driven by the pressing need for inclusive, rigorous, and engaging computer science education. Giant Machines aims to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups in tech with access to these programs by training new and veteran computer science teachers in its Summer Teaching Fellowship.

THE FELLOWSHIP

Summer Teaching Fellows will receive paid in-depth computer science training and support as they gain the technical and pedagogical skills to teach an introductory computer science course. We believe that the best way to learn a subject is to teach it - that's why we've structured the Summer Teaching Fellowship into three steps:

  • Learn to Code (Prework): You'll receive online work and mentorship in preparation for your summer bootcamp. Topics will include HTML, CSS, Python, Flask, Javascript, p5.js, and more. Most of our Summer Teaching Fellows spend 40 - 80 hours engaging in online work in the months leading up to summer. If you already know how to code, this online work will be adapted to your needs and focused on improving your current skill set.
  • Learn to Teach Code (Bootcamp): You'll spend one week with other teachers learning best practices in pedagogy for computer science education, and be paired with a returning instructor for ongoing mentorship throughout the summer. We will be running two Bootcamps this summer: Fellows who will be teaching in-person over the summer will be required to attend the in-person Bootcamp (NYC), while Fellows who will teach virtual courses over the summer will be required to attend the virtual bootcamp.
  • Teach Code (Summer Teacher): You'll work for 3 to 8 weeks teaching summer classes while getting support and feedback from your Lead Instructor and the Giant Machines Learning & Development Team. Depending on preference and location, summer teaching fellows will teach virtually and/or in-person in New York City, Chicago, Dallas, or Jacksonville.

COMMITMENT

Summer Teaching Fellows can expect to work a minimum of 60 virtual hours between April and June, attend a 4-day (32 hrs) teacher training bootcamp the week of July 3rd, 2023, from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM and teach at least three weeks during the summer (8:30 AM - 5:30 PM, weekdays).

Summer Teaching Fellows will receive hourly pay for their learning in the spring and for their bootcamp attendance of $15/hr. During the summer, teachers will receive a $1200 weekly stipend.

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Summer Teaching Fellows are passionate about learning to code, and about empowering students. They come from a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds, but generally they:

  • Love teaching and have a track record of delivering high-quality instruction.
  • Have at least one year of full-time experience teaching any subject. Experience in CS is a plus but not required.
  • Are passionate about learning the Giant Machines curriculum in Python, HTML/CSS, and Javascript.
  • Are excited to develop their teaching craft and pedagogy.
  • Have a mindset that is highly reflective and are extremely receptive to feedback.
  • Hold a strong belief in the capabilities of all students and work hard to create equity-driven, inclusive classroom spaces, and are passionate about equity in CS education.
  • Are team-oriented and can collaborate and communicate well with others to create inclusive and fun classroom spaces.

What do former Summer Teaching Fellows have to say about their experience?

"I am EXCITED to learn with Upperline. It's actually fun even when it gets hard. Even when I feel like I've had a rough teaching day, I know that I have a couch that will help me figure it out. That makes all the difference. That's why Upperline is such a great organization. I may not be the best at everything to do with code BUT I know that if it involves Upperline, I will be supported, I will have resources and more importantly I am important to the organization." - Ileini

"Needs to be stated over and over again, Upperline is all the very best parts of education and I am proud to have been a small part in seeing y'all's mission come to life. I will always be indebted to the Upperline family for the opportunity to learn CS and share it with so many students." - Derek
